Stability Vs Mobility

Mobility: The ability to move freely and easily.

Stability: The ability of the body to maintain balanced posture and support joints during movement.

Each key joint of the body can be classified by their primary function – stability or mobility.

The stability joints are the foot, knee, lumbar spine, cervical spine and elbow. The mobility joints are the ankle, hip, thoracic spine, shoulder and wrist (see picture above!).

When a disruption in this pattern occurs, it can affect the normal function of the joint. Human movement becomes compromised and the chance of injury increases significantly.

Our Reformer exercises specifically focus on keeping stabilisation joints stable and increasing the freedom of movement in the mobilisation joints.
